Connelly was first elected to the Assembly in 1973, At the beginning of the 1993 legislative session, Assemblywoman Connelly was appointed by Speaker to Chair the Committee on Standing Committees, her first leadership appointment. In 1995 Speaker Sheldon Silver appointed her as Speaker Pro Tempore, the highest post ever held by a woman in the New York State Legislature. During her tenure as Chair of the Assembly Committee on Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, she helped usher through the key legislative initiatives to fund and promote community development; create a site selection process; and, safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities. |
