Notes |
Blanche Fierstein served as the longest tenured President of The Arc New York, advocating for individuals with disabilities in that role for over thirteen years. Prior to becoming President of the State Organization's Board of Governors in 1988, Blanche served as a board member of New York City Chapter (AHRC New York City) and spent ten years as an officer of the local board of the Nassau Chapter, Nassau AHRC. She was an eloquent, inspirational, and outspoken advocate for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A parent of a daughter born with a developmental disability, Blanche spoke from the heart as only a parent can. She was a consummate professional in the field, holding position of principle of the Department of Education's Queens Occupational Training Center (OTC) for many years. Not only was she an ardent parent advocate, Blanche played an essential role in the implementation of Governor Pataki's New York State CARES initiative. Her knowledge, her teaching skills, and her ability to "tell it like it is" with candor made her a figure that was well respected by Governors, legislators and government officials. |
