Notes |
Ann Greenberg, founder of AHRC, New York City Chapter of The Arc New York, is responsible for the joining together of thousands of parents, advocates, politicians and individuals across New York State. In 1948, Ms. Greenberg placed a classified ad in the New York Post, reaching out to other parents of children with disabilities. Her intention was to create a school for her son, Jerry, and other children like him. At first only a few parents responded, but within a year, through word of mouth and a few brief newspaper articles, hundreds of parents united. Galvanized by the needs of their children, The Association for the Help of Retarded Children was formed in 1949. Through advocacy and legislative action, Ann's small support group of parents has grown into the largest nonprofit in New York State serving individuals with developmental and other disabilities. |
